While archiving some ancient Zip discs recently, I stumbled upon my very first banner attempt. It was for a very 90's dot com, The Mining Company (now owned by About.com). A few weeks ago omnivorous came across an article on some clever artwork by Geoffrey Raymond, based on Lehman Brother's epic collapse. As shell shocked workers were filing out of headquarters with cardboard boxes in tow, he invited them to grab a Sharpie and jot down their thoughts about newly former boss Richards Fuld onto his fresh painting. Since many of these professionals wouldn't dare comment to journalists, this was a brilliant window in. [It's safe to say no was exactly wishing Fuld well.]

Well today Raymond was at it again across from the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street. This time with ex-Fed Head Alan Greenspan as his muse. And thanks to a few errands, omnivorous was there not just to see it unfold, but to become part of the art itself [third from top].

This sort of participatory art is very 2.0. With the immediacy of a blog post, Raymond is able to capture the present mood of these crazy economic times in a very modern way.

Oh and in case you were wondering, the paintings can be yours for the recession-special pricing of just $15,000.

After hearing and posting about MoMA’s Design and the Elastic Mind exhibit, it had to be seen. Apparently the rest of New York City felt the same way on the day of the close. When you could get around the crowds, there were many great pieces to gawk at, but the most memorable part of the exhibit was also the most experiential — the Shadow Monsters. With a projector and software your shadows underwent metamorphosis and grew animal hair, teeth and fins, all with accompanying sound effects. It was fun to play with or just watch, except for this one guy who took up the room for two minutes to show off his lame hand puppetry. Way to go, Gepetto.

The Skyliner is a neat, little device a friend successfully introduced to the U.S several years ago. It’s a rotating toy that creates glowing messaging with a spin of the wrist. But now it seems the technology has gone to the dogs. Literally. Two Brits have envisioned the LED Dog Tail Communicator, a Frankenstein version for dogs that translates canine body language to human written language. So at 50 wags per minutes [W.P.M.], the tail would glow, "I WANT TO GO OUT". At 80 W.P.M. it might display "I REALLY LOVE YOU." You can only imagine what it says when Fido gets zapped by the electronic fence.

Nearly 10 years ago, Omnipoint Wireless passed on this idea for a live, electronic billboard. Its purpose was to bring attention to the new digital text features within their GSM phones. This was before 'text messaging' or 'user generated content' were in the vernacular. The point to this anecdote is that a couple months ago, colleagues at SS+K pulled off a 2.0 version of the idea, only this time with color, cartoons, satirical context and a projector. Their client CREDO Mobile is not only brave, they are noble, giving 1% of their phone charges to non-profits groups.

For instance, last month in New Zealand, the top gaining query was "Fergie" [the Black Eyed Pea, not the Duchess] while the Germans favored Led Zeppelin. This is an eyewitness account that there is now, in fact, a show on TV that just plays commercials. There is no host. No premise. No irony. Just commercials. They call it Firebrand and it's either the dumbest idea ever, or the shrewdest one. Right now it pretty green, but then again, so was MTV when it first came out. If they figure some things out (like having truly amazing commercials), it might just work. Maybe. Perhaps this could be just a Trojan Horse infomercial for their web counterpart, which is much less of a leap. Putting commercials on the web, finally unlocks something that is inherently missing from TV. The ability for consumers to buy things in the same medium in which they are served. Will Firebrand get pulled? Will it be its own channel? To Be Continued...

Channel surfers couldn't have missed all the green logos on the NBC channels, Bravo, Sci Fi and USA for Green Week. A smart move and very reminiscent of the (RED) campaign. But it was a strange, little ending to the week when a giant 84 foot tree rolled into town. Maybe a better move would been a Rockefeller Christmas tree made out of recycled plastic. Or no tree at all. Now that would have been a huge PR bonanza for the environmentalism movement.

Typography Kicks Ass is a new site that pretty much lives up to its billing. It scans letter shapes from photos in Flickr so you can write out short picto-messages to your friends, or to your mark's families. The Beatles Anthology is a great add for the Netflix queue. The big take away is how prolific the Beatles were in such a short period of time, and how they were never complacent. They even dabbled in new media. When all the TV appearance requests got to be too much, they sent Ed Sullivan a taped version of Paperback Writer. That’s when music videos and MTV were born. Nothing today could come close to touching the kind of buzz the Beatles generated. Things are far too fractured for hit sitcoms, never mind mass hysteria. Then again, High School Musical is pretty unavoidable right now. [I may even have to break down and see it.]

U2’s famous rooftop Where the Streets Have No Name was actually done by the Beatles first.

Two guys quit their jobs to undertake the first-ever cross country trip on a Segway. 100 days later they have a new career in independent film making. 10 MPH is a lot of things. It's a great film. It's a great lesson. And it's a great snapshot of America. In a time when our government is weak and the world hates us, this film is a nice little reminder of how great this country can be.

Miis are another brilliant (and somewhat underrated) element of the Wii system. By including this build-your-own caricatures software, Nintendo shrewdly taps into America's obsession with seeing ourselves on TV (even if it is in a video game.) But perhaps the Japanese are even more self-obsessed? Okay that's impossible. Still, according to a recent report, Wiis outsold Playstation 3s in Japan by a margin of 6 to 1 in June. And if you give up, he says, “Damn It!" and "WHERE’S THE BOMB!!!" a lot. More celebrity Miis here. Make your own (without a Wii) here.

WRONG. These aren't just stuffed animals. These are web crack for kids (and some mom's, too). Collectible like Beanie Babies. Adoptable like Cabage Patch Dolls. Interactive like Tamagotchis. And a stroke of toy marketing genius.

Attached to each Webkinz species is a secret code that creates an avatar for kids to interact with. The website is packed with some pretty good casual games as well. I'm not sure what Mr. Roger's would have thought about the slot machines, but at least the kids get to pick up a little math.

The intros to the HBO shows are some of the best — Six Feet Under. The Sopranos. Even Big Love kind of grows on ya. But nothing comes close to touching this. Back in the day when people actually watched HBO for the movies (and MTV for the music).

Two nights ago was the perhaps the proudest day in my professional life. I was in L.A. to debut our new in cinema gaming technology on behalf of my client msnbc.com, right before the midnight premiere of Spider Man 3. I can’t imagine any commercial message in the history of advertising has ever received a response like this. I'll be updating this site about it once we edit the footage.
